Old Dominion Prepare To Release ‘Most Personal’ Album Yet, ‘Barbara’

Old Dominion is gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Barbara, on August 22. This forthcoming collection of songs is expected to reflect where they are in life and as a band while showcasing their signature sound.

Barbara is Old Dominion’s sixth studio album and, according to the band, their most personal yet. The 13-track project dives deeper emotionally while still delivering the signature hooks and melodies fans know and love.

In between building out their run of headline sets at major festivals across the summer, breaking records at the CMA and ACM Awards, opening a bar named Odies, they carved out the time to create this unforgettable record with a newfound level of growth and maturity.

“The thing about this crazy career,” says lead singer Matthew Ramsey, “so many incredible things have happened, but so much life has also happened. We’ve had people pass away, chapters close, people falling in love, obviously health challenges, if you read People. And when we write for others, we just write to write the best song about whatever moment or feeling we’re chasing right then, and yeah that’s fun.”

He continued, “But when we write for Old Dominion, especially this time, we’re bringing more of ourselves into the room. These are our songs, so they should be pulled from our lives. You don’t realize as you’re writing necessarily, but when we listened to these 13 songs, we all realized: it’s our most personal record ever.”

The album opens with “Making Good Time,” a rhythmic journey through youth and everything that follows that chapter of life. From there, tracks like “Miss You Man” pay tribute to loved ones gone too soon, while “Break Your Mama’s Heart” and “Crying in the Beach Bar” balance heartbreak with some classic Old Dominion swagger.

But even with the plethora of deeper moments, Ramsey says this record leads with positivity and honesty.

“We didn’t want to get all heavy,” Ramsey says. “But I think the feeling good means more when you’re looking life straight in the eye. So much is illusion or what we tell ourselves it is, sometimes if you look in your heart though, reality is even richer. And I think that’s as much the point as anything.”

Other sure-to-be standout tracks like “Me Most Nights,” “What Doesn’t Kill A Memory,” and “Sip in the Right Direction” capture their mission while reminding listeners that life doesn’t have to be all figured out in order to be fulfilling. The project closes out with “Goodnight Music City,” offering a heartfelt nod to Nashville and the songwriting scene that shaped them as a band, especially those post-writing hangouts a few blocks off Music Row that inspired their bar Odies
