MaRynn Taylor is confidently stepping into her next chapter. The rising country star is set to release her long-awaited debut album, MaRynn, on August 22 via Black River Entertainment.
Filled with songs that chronicle her journey as a teenager to an empowered young woman, the self-titled project offers fans an unfiltered look at who she really is: onstage, offstage, and everywhere in between.
Fresh off opening for Kelsea Ballerini and now hitting the road with Jake Scott, MaRynn released her latest single, “dirty blonde,” breakup anthem about reclaiming power after being wronged in a relationship.
We caught up with the Michigan native to chat about the stories behind the songs, her debut album, and what fans can expect next.
Your debut album MaRynn is finally almost here! How does it feel to be putting this body of work out into the world after so much anticipation?
I feel really proud! I’ve waited a long time to be able to put out my debut album. From moving to Nashville when I was seventeen, to writing everyday, to touring this past year, there’s been so much heart put into this album. I named it “MaRynn” because even though this is my first album, it feels like I’m on a first name basis with everyone now. This album is a true reflection of who I am. It’s a really personal, deep dive into my life. I hope when people hear it they get to know me better, but more than that, they put their stories into mine.
The album captures a journey from “teenage sass to independent womanhood.” What personal experiences inspired that evolution in your writing?
The sass is from being an adult woman who is finally becoming confident in my own skin. The “sassy” songs come from my alter ego on stage. When I’m up there, I forget about all my insecurities and problems. I get to live in the music for a little bit. That’s a beautiful thing for me and something I want other women to feel as well.
You co-wrote all but one of the tracks on MaRynn. Was there a particular song that challenged or surprised you during the writing process?
They all came very easily. Some of the songs like “pretty much” or “free ain’t free” were emotionally hard for me because they were so raw and such real feelings, and I wanted to get them right.
“dirty blonde” is already resonating with fans. Can you tell us the story behind that song and how it came to life in the studio?
I wrote “dirty blonde” in Newark, NJ while on the Kelsea tour. Each night I performed on the arena tour I got more and more confident in my skin. It was almost like I finally had the confidence to tell someone what I really thought…. And that’s the headspace I wrote it in. This song is telling someone I used to date—who did me so wrong—what I really thought.
You were writing some of these songs while on tour with Kelsea Ballerini. How did life on the road influence the album creatively or emotionally?
Kelsea is such an incredible human. The first show I was so nervous, and I had texted that to her. I started walking to stage and suddenly she came up behind me and linked arms with me and said, “we are gonna walk there together!” It was the kindest thing another artist has ever done for me. That whole tour shaped me into the kind of artist I wanted to be, and I’m so grateful for that opportunity.
You’ve performed on some pretty legendary stages now — including your Grand Ole Opry debut. What did that milestone mean to you, especially as someone who grew up dreaming of this?
The Opry is a place I hold very dearly to my heart. I’ll drop whatever I’m doing to play there. So many artists before me played there, and they’re just so legendary and accomplished that it’s really amazing to be in the midst of. Getting to watch the magic and to be a little part of it is an honor.
You’ve also opened for artists like Dylan Schneider and now Jake Scott. What have you learned from watching their shows night after night?
I’ve come to find being on the road is a fun life but can be tough when you’re gone for weeks at a time. It’s by no means glamorous—haha! I’ve found my favorite places in each city and exploring is something I never thought I’d get to do. They are both great artists and great guys and I’m so happy I got to warm the stage for them each night!
From “same girl same” to “season 2 of friends,” your lyrics really connect with fans. What’s your songwriting process like when trying to tap into that relatability?
It’s literally just my life. When I was younger and things would happen, if I didn’t understand them, I’d write about it and suddenly know what was going on. Or at least feel better about it. It’s my way of processing. That was these two songs. Why my ex brought his new girlfriend to my concert? Not sure… but I got a song out of it!!
What do you hope fans and the industry take away from your debut album?
I hope they know my heart. I hope they know how genuine and vulnerable each song is. Every move I make in my career is purposeful and for a reason. I care about this so much, and it means the world that people choose to listen and come to the shows!
With the album release and tour dates lined up, what’s next for you in the back half of 2025?
I will be a very Merry MaRynn, that is for sure! Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year so be on the lookout for some fun surprises on that!
