Dierks Bentley brings the fun with his just-released music video for “Broken Branches,” his collaboration with John Anderson and Riley Green.
Shot at a dive bar in East Nashville, the clip features and all-star cast, including Anderson and Green as well as Joey Breaux, Dane Lindfors, Cornbread Cowboi, Trailer Trash Tammy, and Andi Tillman. The Wes Edwards-directed music video also includes cameos from CMT’s “Still The King” stars Travis Nicholson and Jon Sewell as well as Allie Eklund, who recently starred in Bentley’s “She Hates Me” music video.
Bringing the song’s storyline to life, the video invites fans inside a family reunion and introduces viewers to the quirky characters inside the bar.
“Broken Branches” serves as the title track off Bentley’s 11th studio album. The song was written by Zach Abend, Beau Bailey and Graham Barham. According to Bentley, he decided to theme his album around the song “Broken Branches” and its message.
“I was going for a little bit of a theme, just really leaning into the songs I guess is where it all started trying to find the message in the songs. When ‘Broken Branches’ got sent my way, I feel like I found a pretty good place to maybe revolve a record around just this idea of where I sit in my career. I can kind of look at the guys that come before me and all the new guys coming up and the one thing that seems like everyone has in common is just this idea of being a broken branch,” he during a recent conversation with press.
In a separate interview on Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music Country, Bentley explained that he didn’t plot or plan to invite John Anderson and Riley Green to join him on the track, it just happened naturally.
“It’s just the song dictates everything, right. And I heard that song. I love the song. I love the idea that we’re all broken branches off the family tree and we’re little misfits here in Nashville where you make your own friend group,” Bentley explained. “And I heard it as a duet right away.”
After recently touring with Green, Bentley says he instantly came to mind.
“And I just toured with Riley [Green] not too long ago, and he’s definitely just … He’s a little different, in a good way. He is just doing it his own way, always has, funny… great sense of humor. He’s really witty, in a dry kind of way. But always on in that way. So I just thought he’d be a fun person to try. And I texted him, and right away he was in on it,” he revealed. “And while he was singing, I was just watching him sing the song and just John Anderson just came to mind. I guess it might’ve been that song, ‘Black Sheep of the Family,’ which is one of my favorite John Anderson songs. Everything the guy did is so great, but still does it so great. But I just thought, man, that’d be kind of cool to get three generations of broken branches on there.”
This collaboration became the centerpiece of the album, which also includes duets with Miranda Lambert and Stephen Wilson Jr.
The album dropped amid Bentley’s 30-city Broken Branches Tour, which recently launched with support from Zach Top and The Band Loula.
