Breanna Nix poured her heart into a touching rendition of Lauren Alaina’s “Like My Mother Does” during American Idol’s Mother’s Day episode. The tribute struck a personal chord for Nix, who is a mother herself, and left few dry eyes in the audience.
Before stepping on stage, stay-at-home mother from Denton, Texas shared a heartfelt moment with her own mom, Tammie. “Growing up, my mom was super hard on me because she always knew I was made for more,” she said proudly. “It’s made me who I am today. She saw what I was capable of.”
Her song choice was especially fitting. The emotional ballad was recorded as Alaina’s debut single and released in 2011 following her run on American Idol where she finished in second place. The tender tune touches on the strength and unconditional love passed down from a mother to her daughter.
Nix, dressed in a gorgeous pink dress with a floral, moon-lit backdrop, sang straight from the heart, letting her motions lead the way through the gentle lyrics. Told from the perspective of a daughter looking up to her mother, the song serves as both a token of gratitude and a vow to carry on her mother’s grace.
“People always say/ I have a laugh/ Like my mother does/ Guess that makes sense/ She taught me how to smile/ When things get rough/ I’ve got her spirit/ She’s always got my back/When I look at her/ I think, I want to be just like that,” Nix sang beautifully.
She struggled to hold back tears while delivering the final notes, but she mustered up the strength to do finish strong.
Following the performance, the songstress received a standing ovation from the audience and made Underwood realize that the Mother’s Day portion of the show would have her constantly tearing up.
“It was so beautiful – your voice, the song, just all of it,” Underwood boasted before the two women exchanged a “Happy Mother’s Day.”
Luke Bryan added, “You always do great on the vocals, I mean we’re just loving where you’re trending at this point in the competition. You just keep delivering.”
Lastly, Richie commented on her emotional moment in the performance as he said, “We didn’t tell everybody but the best note you can hit is the emotional note called ‘the tear.’ Once you hit ‘the tear,’ you’ve got everybody in the room,” he shared.
Before letting her leave the stage, host Ryan Seacrest made sure to ask how she spent her Mother’s Day. Nix revealed that her husband and son gave her a bouquet along with her favorite snacks and then sent a heartfelt message to her own mom who could not be in the audience that night.
“I love you with everything I have inside of me. Thank you for always being there,” she said with tears welling up in her eyes once again.
Earlier in the show, Breanna Nix took part in the Disney themed songs portion of the competition and delivered “Reflection” from Mulan.
Her powerful night of performances proved strong enough to carry her forward in the competition. Thanks to America’s votes, Nix advanced into the Top 5 alongside John Foster, Jamal Roberts, Slater Nalley, and Thunderstorm Artis. This news sadly meant that Mattie Pruitt and Gabby Samone were eliminated.
