Luke Combs Becomes First Country Artist to Headline Bonnaroo, Surprises Fans With Miranda Lambert and Jon Bellion

Luke Combs made history on Thursday night, becoming the first-ever country headliner at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

The superstar took the stage to deliver a two-hour, hit-filled set and even brought along a few surprise guests: Miranda Lambert and Jon Bellion.

Combs shocked the audience when he shouted, “I’d like to welcome to the stage Miss Miranda Lambert!”

In videos captured by Bonnaroo attendees, Lambert could be seen walking onto the stage with a huge smile on her face as the crowd erupted with cheers and applause.

The Texas native rocked a custom embellished tee featuring lyrics from Luke Combs’ 2020 hit “Lovin’ On You.” She completed the look with a denim mini skirt, cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, and a statement belt buckle.

Combs and Lambert hugged and went on to deliver their duet, “Outrunnin’ Your Memory,” which is featured on Combs’ Growin’ Up album. The artists co-wrote the tune together alongside Dan Isbell.

The song features Combs and Lambert reflecting on a breakup, confessing that letting go of their ex has been anything but easy.

“Outrunnin’ your memory is like outrunnin’ the wind/ I can’t get where I’m going if I can’t leave where you’ve been/ I see you in every sunset, every star in the sky/ I hear you callin’ my name in the middle of the night/ The longer gone I get on down the road/ Reminds me baby, that there just ain’t no/ Outrunnin’ your memory,” they sang.

Combs previously shared his excitement over working with Lambert, admitting, “Obviously, man, I think she’s one of the best artists, writers of, you know, not only our generation but of all time.”

Following their duet, the two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year allowed Lambert to take the spotlight to perform one of her biggest hits, ”Kerosene.”

Bellion also joined Combs during the show. They teamed up for a performance of their recently released duet, “Why.”

Combs isn’t the first country artist to take the stage at Bonnaroo — recent years have seen performances from stars like Kacey Musgraves, Kip Moore, and Zac Brown Band — but he is the first to headline the festival. He tops the bill alongside Tyler, The Creator on Friday, Olivia Rodrigo on Saturday, and Hozier on Sunday.

When he was announced as the headliner, Combs took to social media to share his disbelief over the news.

“What is life y’all? Man, one day you pick up a guitar and you’re trying to learn how to play. A few years later you’re playing your own shows. A few years later you moved to Nashville and so on and so forth, and here we are, man. Headlining freaking Bonnaroo this coming year,” Combs began.

He admitted this was another “I made it” moment before encouraging his fans to come out to the show.

“Oh my gosh, man, I’m so excited. It’s going to be so much fun,” he said at the time. “I hope y’all give us a chance out there. I hope y’all come see the show. I promise we got a lot of special stuff for y’all out there. Look forward to seeing you at the Roo this year.”

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival continues through Sunday, June 15.
