Alexandra Kay is keeping the up the momentum of her lover girl era with her newest release, “The Last.” The swoon-worthy tune feels both fresh and familiar for fans who’ve followed her journey from the heartbreak that appears in her debut album, All I’ve Ever Known, to healing coming to light in her next musical chapter.
Sitting down with co-writers Andrew DeRoberts and Jon Green, Kay recalls opening up about the joy she feels in her new relationship following a divorce. However, she also got honest about something that had been weighing on her heart regarding elements of her past and how it could affect her current love life.
“I was talking about how I was in a new relationship, and I was very happy and am still in that relationship. And the one thing that always kind of stayed in the back of my mind is I really hope that me having some of these life experiences before him doesn’t sour them for him at some point in life,” she explained to Country Now. “And so that was kind of just the conversation we were having and we just started talking about how we wanted to write a song about how it doesn’t matter anything that’s happened prior to this. It’s like life starts now with you and it doesn’t matter what happened first as long as I do that last with you.”

Pulling From Real-Life Emotions
The result is a song pulled straight from the heart that hits extra close home in her current phase of life. With her charming and authentically real vocals on full display among wistful acoustic guitar, the rising star offers a declaration of newfound love and a reminder that some of life’s best chapters come after the pain of heartbreak. She proves that nothing that happened in the past matters once you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.
“Be the last thing on my mind/ Every night when I close my eyes/ Be the last arms I fall into/ When the sun falls out of that sky/ Gave you my heart and for the first time/ I don’t want it back/ Be the last,” she delivers on the chorus.
Getting To Perform The New Tune Next To Her Boyfriend
Adding to the emotional weight of the song, Kay gets to perform it each night with her guitar player, who also happens to be her boyfriend, Rocko Beall.
“We perform it together every night acoustic, and it’s a real moment. It’s wonderful,” she admits before later reflecting further on how much this sentiment truly means to her.
“It feels great. On my last album, there’s a song called ‘Painted Imperfect,’ and in that song it says, ‘I’d sing his praises on every stage, and he just had to mention he hates the attention.’ And so it feels really cool in my life to be up there with somebody that I can just love so loudly, and he’s not embarrassed by that, and he loves me so loudly and so proudly, and it’s just a really healthy scenario. It feels amazing.”
Gaining Traction Among Fans
“The Last” exploded online before it was even officially released. As a result, fans have already been belting the lyrics back to the songstress at sold-out shows worldwide.
“We’re on a fully sold out UK tour right now, and we played Dublin, Ireland, and I was like, ‘how are we so far away from home and this song hasn’t come out yet and you’re all singing it?’ I’m like, I do not understand, but I’m so, so grateful,” Kay said honestly.
She continued, “I just think it’s really, really cool that these fans were there for me in the hardest time of my entire life and supported me in ways they don’t even know. And now they’re kind of a part of this relationship and this love that’s blossoming and it’s just really cool to get to share so much with them. Not everybody is such an open book, but I’ve always been this way, and so I really enjoy just making them a part of my life.”

New Album Coming Later This Year
Looking ahead to what’s next, Alexandra Kay revealed that her next project is going to feature some of the same elements found in her last album, All I’ve Ever Known, as well as fresh sounds inspired by her current love story.
“One thing that I didn’t want you to do is fall in love with All I’ve Ever Known, that sound and then come to my new record and it’s like all pop and upbeat and you don’t get anything that you love from the last record. And so I really wrote with that in mind. And there’s a lot of transition songs.”
She hinted that there’s one track in particular called “Better Off” that she feels “should have lived” on her previous collection. Since teasing it on social media months ago, fans have been begging for it to come to light and now it’s finally getting its chance.
“I shared it with my label and they were like, oh yeah, absolutely. And so we’re just kind of going to tell the story from ‘Better Off’ kind of living in that land and then kind of trickle down to where we get to the happy stuff. So you’re definitely going to hear where I am now, where I’ve been in some transition songs over the last two years too.”
The BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville artist is currently sharing her emotions and heart through sold-out shows across the UK and Europe on her All I’ve Ever Known Tour. This follows a run of U.S. shows named after her recent release, “Cupid’s A Cowgirl.”
Alexandra Kay is set to close out this European leg with a sold-out show in London on May 29, before opening for Brad Paisley this summer and performing throughout the week at CMA Fest in Nashville June 5-8.
